“Health” is not merely having an absence of symptoms and disease. This understanding is crucial to living fully, actively, happily, and healthily. It is the body’s ability to adapt to its environment and meet our needs with optimal vital functions that defines “health.” The balance of our body’s systems is known as homeostasis. What regulates our body’s ability to maintain this balance is our autonomic nervous system. This incorporates our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which act in opposition to each other. Today, the sympathetic system (fight or flight response) is usually overactive and out of alignment in our busy, work-laden lives. We feel anxious, agitated and rushed. The Parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest response) helps us to relax and take care of non-life threatening and emotionally neutral functions, such as digestion. These systems are regulated by our nutrition and the environments that we subject ourselves to—but, more importantly, they are regulated by our brain and spinal cord.
When we are unwell, stressed, injured, and in pain, our ability to adapt—to heal—is affected by our body’s ability to regulate the balance of our sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Chiropractic Doctors are a conservative, safe, gentle, and drug-free approach to maintaining that balance in order to heal from trauma, illness, and stress. It also helps us to stay in proper biomechanical functioning order so that we don’t injure ourselves in the future, and allows us to adapt more efficiently to the outside world.
Chiropractic manipulation is a form of specific manual controlled mobilization to restore normal and full range of motion to joints. This is important because the receptors of our bodies that control our functions, balance, and overall health can be accessed through proper joint function with full and pain free motion. These receptors (our nerves) take information from outside and transmit them to the brain and spinal cord which, in turn, relays commands and information to our body’s systems (muscular system, skeletal system, organ systems, etc.). They send these signals through incoming nerve tracts and reflex arcs that we only perceive to be painful less than 10% of the time. This stressful or harmful information, which the body is trying to balance out, is called noxious stimuli. Very often, the first signs of noxious stimuli are your body’s lack of full and biomechanically correct joint motions, which a Doctor of Chiropractic has years of training to be able to diagnosis and treat. Remember: the signs are almost never painful until it’s too late and they’ve created a larger problem-- taking up your body’s attention while impairing your overall health!
The body is always trying to heal itself. Modern medicine uses this to its advantage by supplying (through drugs) the proper chemical states to help allow this. Surgeons perform operations with the understanding the body will heal after surgery. Physical therapists help the body heal itself after injury with proper guided exercise and functional movement training. The power of chiropractic manipulation is in the ability to take this a step further, affecting the Central Nervous System and allowing your body the ability to heal itself as efficiently as possible.
Dr. Hamm uses the entirety of his training to address the body’s systems and biomechanical function to allow for each person’s individualized optimal healing ability through a nonsurgical, conservative, and medication-free approach. His focus is on the body’s nervous system adaptability and overall biomechanical and functional movement. He has worked with everyone: families, professional combat athletes, Cirque de Soleil performers, professional dancers, and has even been featured in international news while treating royalty.
